Travel planning
How to plan a medical trip to China
A practical checklist for appointments, travel, accommodation and continuity of care.
Before you book
Confirm the prospective appointment, required documents and estimated costs. Ask your clinician about fitness to travel. Check entry requirements with the appropriate embassy or consulate using your nationality, purpose of visit and itinerary; policies can change.
Build a realistic budget
Keep medical and travel costs separate. Include accommodation, local transport, interpretation, companion expenses and contingency time. Ask about deposits, refunds, payment methods and whether an estimate may change after assessment.
Arrange daily support
Consider mobility, dietary needs, language and support from a companion. Check the distance between your accommodation and appointments. Keep contact information accessible offline and bring the documents your hospital has specifically requested.
Plan the return journey
Discuss recovery time and any restrictions on flying with your medical team. Obtain discharge documents and a follow-up plan. Ensure you know how to seek local urgent care and how your usual clinician can access relevant information.
